So, my best friend got into a pretty serious horseback riding accident. She suffered a severe abdominal injury and spent several days in the ICU. Fast-forward a month and 1/2 later, and she was finally cleared to return to school. However, she was still healing, so she had to be extremely careful about physical contact around her abdomen. She was even allowed to leave classes early so she could avoid crowded hallways and prevent anyone from accidentally bumping into her. For some background, my bestfriend and I have always had this thing where we poke each other in the sides to mess around. We call it “tasing,” and it’s basically when you take two fingers and poke someone in their side. My best friend has always hated when I would do it to her, but we usually just laugh it off. Anyway, one day we were sitting at lunch with a few friends when she decided to poke me in the side. She laughed, so I figured it was only fair to do it back. Well, when I poked her, she immediately started crying and held her abdomen because apparently the area was still extremely sensitive from her accident, and it hurt her. At first, my other friends and I laughed because we didn’t think it was that serious. But then she told me she was genuinely upset with me for doing that, especially because I knew how badly she had been injured. I told her that was stupid because she had literally just done the exact same thing to me. I also called her a hypocrite because I didn’t understand how she could do something to me and then get mad when I did it back. She was clearly upset, but I felt like she was overreacting because she was the one who started it. I understand that she was recovering from a serious injury, but I still don’t think it’s fair for her to do something to me and expect me not to do it back. I just wanted to get this off my chest and hear what other people think about the situation.
